Back to Character & Community
Roanoke City Greenway Program
The Greenway Project is an example of how we work with our Partners in Education through local schools. We formed a partnership with Roanoke City, Roanoke County, Botetourt County and Salem City Schools to achieve three goals. First, we want to reinforce with the students the importance of maximizing the opportunity they get for a great education so they succeed in life after high school. Secondly, we want students to be aware of the opportunities that exist for a career in our industry. Thirdly, we want students to see the importance of being good corporate citizens after they graduate by giving back to the community where they live and work.
The Greater Raleigh Court Civic League received a grant to complete a segment of the Murray Run Greenway Trail. However, the quote they received was more than three times the amount of the grant. Lanford Brothers and other local members of the VRTBA stepped up to the plate. We agreed to build this section of the greenway for the amount of the grant and donated all our services to the project. The project happened to be located adjacent to a local high school and provided us an opportunity to learn about the greenway system, as well as the design and building of an actual transportation system.
